Overview
Berkey Light Water Filter System
Capacity: 2.75 Gallons (10.4 L)
Material: High-quality, BPA-free, food-safe, copolyester container
The Berkey Light was initially designed as a lower-cost, lightweight alternative to our stainless steel units. Weighing in at a mere seven pounds, it can provide enough water for groups of up to 20 people. The Berkey Light requires no water pressure and no electricity and uses the same Black Berkey Filters used in the stainless steel units.
The Berkey Light's see-through aspect makes it easier to quickly and accurately determine how much water is in the upper and lower chambers. The six-inch elevated base allows you to place a drinking water glass under the spigot without putting the unit on the counter's edge. The BPA-free copolyester material is durable, making it dent- and shatter-proof. The Berkey Light is produced at the same quality as the stainless steel models at a more economical price.

Berkey Light Water Filter FAQ
The Berkey Light Water Filter system has a holding capacity of 2.75 gallons of drinking water. This Berkey system is a lower-cost, lightweight alternative to the stainless steel Berkey Water Filter systems. The Berkey Light System is perfect for small to medium-sized families ranging from 2-6 people.
We recommend keeping the Berkey Light out of direct sunlight to prevent algae growth. The only other maintenance we suggest is to wash the lower chamber once per month with soapy dishwater. Calcium scale may build up on spigots and chambers after prolonged use using a hard water source. To remove scale build-up, soak affected part(s) in vinegar or a 50-50% mix of vinegar and water for about 15 minutes. Finish by cleaning with soapy dishwater. After regular use, the flow rate of your system may decrease. To speed up the flow rate, scrub the exterior of each filtration element with a stiff brush or Scotch-Brite® pad and re-prime elements.
The Berkey Light is a popular system because it is portable, lightweight, and see-through. The Berkey Light can hold 2.75 gallons which is an excellent capacity. Another favorite feature of Berkey Light is the included base. The base raises the entire system allowing space between the countertop and the spigot, so filling up a glass or water bottle is more accessible. Bonus: the Berkey Light LED Base lights up water droplets, so it glows!
No, in 2008, the new Millennium Concepts manufacturer developed and released a Berkey Light BPA-free system.
Before that, the Berkey Light systems were made of food-grade polycarbonate approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Some research suggests that polycarbonates leach BPA (Bisphenol-A) when exposed to industrial-grade alkaline detergents or when repeatedly exposed to temperatures over 192 degrees Fahrenheit (88 degrees Celsius). Neither scenario occurs when using a Berkey Light typically. New studies concerning the possible leaching of BPA are ongoing. New Millennium Concepts decided to use an alternative to the polycarbonate previously used to produce the Berkey Light system. Fortunately, a new product was developed that is BPA FREE. New Millennium Concepts, Ltd. replaced the polycarbonate material with this new material to alleviate any concerns our customers might have. Not only is this copolyester highly durable and dishwasher safe, but it is also scratch, stain, shatter, and odor-resistant.
PLEASE NOTE: The recycle code found on the bottom of plastic containers is called Resin Identification Code. Polycarbonate is simply one type of plastic that falls under code #7. Code #7 is a catchall code that means "Other" most products that do not fit into categories #1 through #6 are placed into category #7. It is also for products made from more than one type of plastic in categories #1 through #6. The new copolyester used by the Berkey Light system is also categorized as #7, although it is not polycarbonate and contains no BPA.
It is rare but possible. Excessive pressure from over-handling the spigot could cause a stress fracture. For this to happen, it takes extreme strain or force on the Berkey Light, so regular use should not cause it to crack.
Yes, the manufacturer changed the plugs for the Berkey Light. Any Berkey Light made in 2014 or later will have slightly larger holes in the upper chamber and somewhat large hole plugs. This change was made to make the hole plugs universal between stainless steel and Berkey Light systems.
The manufacturing date of your Berkey can be found on the embossing at the bottom of the upper chamber. Look for a circle with a two-digit number in it. A 14 in the circle indicates 2014.
If you notice something green in the lower chamber of your Berkey Light, it may be algae.
Berkey water is filtered water, which is free of preservative chemicals that would stop algae growth. The Berkey Light is also transparent, allowing water into the chamber, and creating a greenhouse effect. Both can create ideal algae conditions.
To prevent the growth of algae, relocate the system somewhere where it's not in direct sunlight. Wash the chambers monthly with soap and water. Some customers place a pure silver coin in the lower chamber, which prevents the algae from growing. This is due to the natural anti-microbial properties of silver.
